Paul worked to advance spiritual health in the body of Christ as he dealt with the church in Corinth in much the same manner as a physician works to promote physical health in the physical body. All he could see was spiritual sickness in a diseased body that was in dire need of some spiritual medicine. In Chapter 1 of Corinthians, we see that the Corinthian church was inundated by “divisions” and “contentions.” They were divided among different philosophies, different world views and also divided concerning the different pastors and teachers. Some said, “I am of Paul,” while others stated, “I am of Apollos.”
